SAKK grieves the loss of an internationally renowned researcher

Prof. Dr. med. Peter Meier-Abt studied medicine at the Universities of Fribourg and Basel. As a specialist in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology and toxicology, he devoted his entire professional career to advancing the medical sciences in Switzerland – at universities as well as at a number of foundations and other organizations. Among other things, he was a committed member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation and of the Novartis Research Foundation, and he sat on the Ethics Committee of the Canton of Zurich.

As President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences (SAMW/ASSM) for many years, he was the driving force behind the conception and realization of the Swiss Personalized Health Network. From 2009 to 2012, moreover, he was President of the Swiss Clinical Trial Organisation (SCTO).

SAKK greatly appreciated being able to work with Peter Meier-Abt and benefit from his extensive experience and his vision of strengthening clinical research in Switzerland.

We will always remember his outstanding commitment to elevating Switzerland into a leading position in personalized healthcare research and to overcoming the hurdles that stood in the way of this vision. Peter Meier-Abt’s work is certain to have a visible and lasting influence on medical research in Switzerland.
